Description
A systematic metal detecting survey was undertaken by Highland Archaeology Services in 2021 covering work on new silt pools at Laggan, Spean Bridge, Highland. The work was undertaken to fulfil a planning condition put in place due to the site being within the designated battlefield ‘The Battle of the Shirts’ fought in 1544. The original survey recovered 136 objects and further metal detecting of spoil heaps/bunds during a subsequent watching brief (see EHG5856) recovered a further 158 objects. Artefacts included thirteen spade heads, fourteen articulated iron straps, many nails, pins and miscellaneous iron objects. Five complete glass bottles and various modern ceramics were also retrieved. The majority of the objects appear to be connected to a levelled house noted on the first edition map (1871) in the far NW corner of the site while others may be associated with a nursery operating on the site in the 1960’s. No objects thought to relate to the 1544 battle were noted. <1>
