EHG5892 - Watching brief - cable trench, Bridgend Farmhouse, Watten

Technique(s)

Organisation

Highland Archaeology Services Ltd

Date

July 2021

Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Highland Archaeology Services in 2021 during the excavation of a trench for an electricity cable servicing Bridgend Farmhouse, crossing the yard at Watten Mill, Caithness. A desk based assessment was undertaken prior to fieldwork, which demonstrated the potential for remains of cist burials that had been excavated in the vicinity of the proposed cable during the 19th century. The ground had obviously been heavily used and only natural or modern deposits were encountered. A stone and concrete inspection hatch was encountered, and a dry stone boundary wall was recorded. No artefacts, cuts or deposits of archaeological interest were encountered. No further work is recommended. <1>
