Description
An archaeological desk-based assessment and walkover survey were undertaken by GUARD Archaeology in 2021 on land proposed for development at Milton of Culloden, Inverness. The aims of the study were to assess evidence for the past human use of the area, its archaeological sensitivity, and the potential impact of any development upon the archaeological resource. The desk-based assessment examined the area proposed for development (the Site) and a radius of approximately 100 m beyond its boundary (the buffer zone). A second buffer was established at 200 m from the Site boundary within which all designated cultural heritage sites were included. Study of the surrounding landscape was necessary to establish the local archaeological and historical context, in order to provide a broader understanding of the historical development of the area and the potential for as-yet-unidentified archaeological remains within that area. The archaeological assessment found that there are three known cultural heritage sites within the proposed development area that could potentially be directly affected by the proposal. These are a prehistoric ring ditch that is a Scheduled Monument, a late eighteenth century house that is a category B Listed Building, and a post-medieval mill pond. The prehistoric ring ditch is of national significance, the house is of regional significance and the mill pond is of lesser cultural heritage significance. <1>
