EHG5955 - Watching brief - geotechnical test pits, Dounreay

Technique(s)

Organisation

Date

Oct-Nov 2021

Description

A watching brief was undertaken by Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology (ORCA) in 2021 during geotechnical works at Lower Dounreay, Caithness, prior to onshore construction works associated with an offshore wind farm development. No features of archaeological significance were encountered during the works. The location and size of the excavated trenches was dictated by the requirements of the geotechnical works and purposefully avoided the vicinity of known archaeological sites. Whilst good coverage across the Site was provided therein, it may be that the results of the watching brief are not fully representative of the archaeological potential of the area as a whole. It is possible that archaeological remains are present on the Site but have not been exposed by the current phase of works. <1>
