EHG5966 - DBA and walkover survey - proposed borrow pits, Abernethy RSPB Reserve
Technique(s)
Organisation
RSPB
Date
Jan-Feb 2022
Description
A desk-based assessment and walkover survey were carried out by the RSPB in 2002 in advance of proposals for a number of borrow pits within the RSPB's Abernethy Reserve. The aims of the DBA were to identify known and potential assets within the study area; assess the significance and condition of the assets, to assess the impact of the proposed development and, where appropriate, suggest suitable mitigation. No known sites were likely to be impacted by the proposed borrow pits and it was believed that, because rising sloping ground is preferred for the locations of the borrow pits, it was highly unlikely that any archaeological features would be found by chance. The walkover survey focussed on following the three tracks where the small borrow pits were to be dug. Some parts of the tracks date to post-WWII, others are recorded on the 1st edition OSmaps and may have been used for centuries. The three tracks were walked between 23 January and 3 February 2022. Photographs were taken of a representative sample of the borrow-pit sites. No new sites were recorded. <1> <2>
