Technique(s)
Organisation
ORCA
Date
Nov-Dec 2022
Description
A watching brief was undertaken by Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology (ORCA Archaeology) in 2022 during the groundworks for geotechnical investigations in advance of the construction of an electricity converter station at Spittal, Caithness. All ground-breaking works associated with the project were monitored and a total of 41 trial pits were excavated, though Trial Pits 10 (TP 10) and 15 (TP 15) were not excavated in this scheme of works. No deposits or features of archaeological significance were encountered. The deposits encountered predominantly represented modern (C20) agricultural activity and improvement. The watching brief also identified areas with greater potential for the preservation of archaeological features, in less intensively improved areas of land. <1>
