Description

A metal detecting survey was undertaken by E Soane for Avon Archaeology (Highland) in 2023 in advance of groundworks for an extension to Culrain & District Village Hall, Culrain, Highland. The fieldwork was designed to establish the presence or absence of significant archaeological deposits and features within the footprint of the proposed development area associated with the designated Battlefield of the Battle of Carbisdale (BTL19), fought on the 27th April 1650. The village hall site is located towards the western edge of the designated battlefield area where it bounds the Kyle of Sutherland. The metal detecting survey recovered a very small collection of metal objects, all of which were of modern origin and appear to reflect casual loss. The survey was followed by archaeological trial trenching (see EHG6003). <1>
