EHG6052 - Excavation - Ardmolich Wood, Moidart

Technique(s)

Organisation

AOC Archaeology Group

Date

July 2016

Description

An excavation of a charcoal burning platform was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group in 2016 in Ardmolich Wood, Moidart. The site had been located in a pre-felling walkover survey (see EHG5104) which had recorded 20 archaeological sites comprising mainly platforms, several possible hut circles, field banks and clearance cairns. The excavation provided a more in-depth understanding of the construction and use of the platforms. It also provided a record of the site in advance of construction of a forwarding track for felling. A programme of post-excavation work including documentary research was subsequently undertaken, completed in 2018, to analyse the date and function of the platform and place it in the wider context of early industry on Moidart. <1>
