EHG6060 - Trial trenching - new house plot, Castle Street, Dornoch

Technique(s)

Organisation

Highland Archaeology Services Ltd

Date

April 2023

Description

A programme of archaeological desk based assessment and controlled soil strip was undertaken by Highland Archaeology Services in 2023 prior to the development of a new house on Castle Street, Dornoch. These measures were designed to identify and record archaeological remains that may have survived upon the site, thereby satisfying the requirements of a Condition attached to planning consent. Prior to this in 2020, a watching brief of GI test-pits had been commissioned by a previous land-owner (see EHG6059) No archaeologically significant features, layers or artefacts were encountered during either phase of fieldwork. There was evidence of extensive prior test-pitting across the site, but there was no evidence that these had disturbed archaeologically significant layers. Given the negative archaeological results, no further work was recommended for this site. <1>
