Description
A watching brief was undertaken by CFA Archaeology in 2023 in advance of the proposed construction of a pedestrian tunnel and and the installation of a drystone wall on Land at Hope, Strathmore. The majority of the construction works across this area related to the installation of a new drystone wall. A watching brief was required during the initial ground works for the construction of a
diversion tunnel (to divert the river) and works for the formation of a pedestrian tunnel. The watching brief was restricted to the east of the public road. The limited works on the diversion tunnel to the west of the road had been mainly completed by the time of the watching brief. Three areas were stripped under archaeological monitoring during the initial groundworks: Area 1, measured 52.685m² and was dug to a depth of 0.2-0.8m; Area 2 measured 4.656m² and was dug to a depth of 0.7m; Area 3 measured
26.592m² and was dug to a depth of 0.6-0.8m. No features, deposits or artefacts of archaeological significance were identified during this programme of works. <1>
