Description
An archaeological strip, map and record watching brief was undertaken by Headland Archaeology (UK) in 2021 on land to the south of Redwood Avenue, Inverness, in advance of construction works relating to residential development. The work was carried out in response to a planning condition, as previous trial trenching works undertaken in the area in 2016 (see EHG5334) revealed evidence of prehistoric activity in two parts of the site. An area of 755m² was stripped of topsoil, focusing on where three pits had been uncovered during the trial trenching. No additional archaeology was uncovered indicating that the three pits found during the previous works were not part of a wider cluster of activity. The stony nature of the geological subsoil and the slope of the area likely made it unattractive for both arable and domestic use, hence the lack of additional activity. <1>
