Date

Dec 2023

Description

A watching brief was undertaken by Highland Archaeology Services in 2023 during the development of a new house at Chapel Street, Tain. The project involved the excavation of 63m² although due to limited space on the site and the depth of the spoil the area was split in 2 parts, (Area A and Area B) with spoil from B filling Area A as B was excavated. The proposed area to the north east of the site was not watched during these works due to amount of spoil being produced. The site was found to contain a large buried midden with material of C19th and early C20th date spread over a raised beach. A representative sample of midden material was recovered and recorded along with the basic stratigraphy. Following discussion with the Highland Council’s Archaeologist it was agreed that no further field work was necessary. No post excavation work was recommended. <1>
