Description

An archaeological metal detecting survey was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group in 2022 as part of a programme of archaeological mitigation for the Tomatin to Moy section of the A9 Dualling Programme. The survey was undertaken at Site 93: The Rout of Moy (National Grid Reference (NGR): 272980, 834637), and an area extending to approximately 200 m either side of the modern marker cairn within the Proposed Scheme footprint. This also incorporated a section of General Wades Military Road. There was extensive tree cover across the survey area; however, comprehensive coverage was still obtained. All metal detector signal spots were excavated. There was no artefactual evidence associated with the Rout of Moy event or the military road identified within the survey area. This may indicate that the limited activity associated with the event does not present itself archaeologically. This is a common result from metal detector surveys of similar sites within the archaeological record. The results also indicate there was limited artefactual evidence deposited alongside the military road, related to activity within the survey area during the 18th and 19th centuries. There is potential for modern forestry activity to have disturbed any artefactual evidence in the surrounding area. The survey revealed a small amount of metal detritus including aluminium drinks cans, wire, modern coin, a battery and shredded aluminium. These were related to modern forestry activities and general waste from public visits. All material was removed from site and recycled. <1>
