EHG6228 - Watching brief - Beauly 132 kV Substation Reinforcement
Technique(s)
Organisation
AOC Archaeology Group
Date
Dec 2022
Description
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group in 2022 in advance of substation reinforcement works at Beauly Substation, Balblair. Previous archaeological investigations around the substation had identified a suite of prehistoric structures including roundhouses, field boundaries and clearance cairns within the development area. The basal remains of a linear alignment of stony cairns or mounds were identified. Although poorly preserved and truncated by previous vegetation removal, they were thought to have formed part of the features of a prehistoric field system related to the wider settlement at Balblair Wood. Further analysis of the environmental samples retrieved may provide further information on the chronology of the site and aid in wider understanding of prehistoric field systems. <1>
