Date

Description
An archaeological metal detecting survey was undertaken by Avon Archaeology (Highland) in 2024 at a site of proposed development situated adjacent to Viewhill Farmhouse, Viewhill, Culloden, in accordance with the requirements of Historic Environment Scotland (HES) and in advance of the determination of a planning application for development of a new dwelling. The site was located within the footprint of the designated Culloden Battlefield (BTL6), where Jacobite and Royal armies fought in 1746. The evaluation involved a detailed and systematic metal detecting survey of the area of proposed development in order to recover and identify all metal artefacts preserved therein. The survey recovered a very small assemblage of 18 metal objects, the great majority of which were dated with confidence to the later post-medieval and modern period. None of the objects recovered were considered to be archaeologically significant or to relate to the 1746 battle. <1>
