EHG6254 - Test pitting - proposed forestry road, Benmore

Technique(s)

Organisation

AOC Archaeology Group

Date

July 2024

Description

Archaeological works were undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group in 2024 ahead of the construction of a new forest road at Benmore Forest, Lairg. Fieldwork was carried out on two separate visits, on 30th April for the walkover survey (see EHG6253) and 15th July 2024 for the test pitting. A series of test trenches were opened across the small land parcel between the forestry and the A837 road. This area showed that the natural geology consisted of undulating ground conditions at the base of a hill slope. Across the location of the proposed access track, six test trenches of various sizes and orientations were excavated. The excavation revealed a natural geology of glacially deposit moraine and deep peat with no potential for buried or upstanding archaeological remains. No further archaeological work was recommended. <1>
