Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group in 2024 with regards the proposed replacement bridge at A836 Naver Bridge, Invernaver, Bettyhill. Machine excavation was monitored during July-August 2024 for topsoil clearance ahead of construction of the site compound. While much of the compound site had been disturbed by modern dumping of material, the truncated remains of four prehistoric features were uncovered alongside several struck flint flakes. In addition, detailed recording was undertaken of a possible still site that was situated adjacent to a small stream course within the development area. The site had been identified during a previous phase of archaeological work (see EHG6262). <1> Post-excavation work was subsequently carried out. The features consisted of the remains of a small post-defined structure built around a probable fire pit. The features contained a small number of flint, prehistoric ceramic and biotite stone artefacts. The charcoal from these features provided radiocarbon dates suggesting activity on the site in the Early Bronze Age. The results provided evidence for the wider archaeological landscape and indicate the potential for further buried archaeology in the area. <2>
