Date

April 2024

Description

A pre-afforestation walkover survey was conducted by Argyll Archaeology in 2024 over c. 65 hectares of land located on the northern shore of Loch Arkaig. Twenty-two sites of archaeological or historical interest were recorded within or adjacent to the boundary of the surveyed area. The sites comprised structures (dwelling and storage/barn), a corn drying kiln, stone enclosures and walls and field clearance cairns. The majority of the sites recorded were located in the area earmarked for forest restoration and as such it was recommended that they should be protected from physical damage by tracking plant and machinery. Where necessary sites should be cordoned off to avoided by accidental damage. Those sites located within the planting zone should be protected from physical damage by an appropriate buffer zone in which no ground breaking activity or the tracking of plant is allowed during preparatory and forestry works. <1>
