EHG6270 - Emergency site recording - North Place of Arms, Dog Cemetery, Fort George

Technique(s)

Organisation

AOC Archaeology Group

Date

June 2024

Description

A phase of emergency recording was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group in 2024 at Fort George, Ardesier (PIC332) following the identification of significant damage to the northwest Place of Arms sea wall enclosing the Dog Cemetery. The works included emergency recording of the extent of the damage prior to underpinning works taking place to stabilise the structure. Multiple phases of repair were identified within the sea wall itself. Additionally, outside the PIC boundary, a secondary, possibly later, wall was recorded to the west of the main sea wall and a long stretch of likely 20th century midden material recorded along the coast. All of which are currently subject to significant coastal erosion. A further watching brief was planned during the underpinning works. <1>
