EHG6288 - Watching brief - proposed Nairn Academy
Technique(s)
Organisation
AOC Archaeology Group
Date
July-Aug 2024
Description
An archaeological watching brief was carried out by AOC Archaeology Group in 2024 at Nairn Academy, Nairn. The site is set within a greenfield site where buried archaeological remains have been previously uncovered. The fieldwork identified ten archaeological features consisting of six pits, two postholes, a fire pit, and a possible gully. Sherds of prehistoric pottery and a possible coarse stone tool were identified within the postholes. Made-ground and buried soil deposits were encountered across the site which was left in-situ in some areas. It is likely that more archaeological features survive below this and will be preserved in-situ. The results from the archaeological work have provided evidence for significant prehistoric activity. Post-excavation analyses will be required to interpret the chronology and the activities undertaken on the site and to put the results into context of the wider archaeological landscape. It was recommended that any future ground breaking works in areas where deposits have been left in-situ should be subject to archaeological watching brief. <1>
