Date
June 2024
Description
An archaeological desk based assessment and walkover survey was undertaken by Highland Archaeology Services in 2024 ahead of an underground cable connection between Mybster substation and Cogle Moss windfarm. The survey was conducted between the 3rd and 5th of June 2024, the weather was overcast with periods of sun and heavy rain. Of the proposed route, there were two limited areas totalling around 300m which could not be surveyed due to limited access to the land, and livestock. These areas were photographed from outwith the land boundary, although neither area had any visible upstanding archaeological remains. Twenty eight features were noted during the survey, all of which were thought to be post medieval/modern. This included a large longhouse and mill with lade and pond at Langergill. In addition, drystone walls and slab fences were plotted close to the route, with the walls that crossed the route recorded in more detail. Micro-siting was recommended in order to avoid damaging any archaeological features along the route. If this was not possible then it was recommended that a watching brief and more detailed recording should be undertaken for the affected features. <1>
