Technique(s)
Organisation
Highland Archaeology Services Ltd
Date
July 2024
Description
A walkover survey was undertaken by Highland Archaeology Services in 2024 in advance of the development of the construction of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) comprising a compound of battery and electrical equipment, access track, landscaping and ancillary works at Saval, east of Loch Shin. A desk-based assessment identified a number of prehistoric archaeological features in the area, including a burnt mound and hut circles. The walkover survey recorded 30 features within the specified survey area. The location of previously recorded features was confirmed, and associated features including enclosures and clearance cairns were recorded. A programme of mitigation was recommended in order to record features that are likely to be affected by development works. This included further recording in the winter months when foliage would likely be low, excavation of features within the development footprint and access routes, marking off features close to development areas and watching brief in the vicinity of prehistoric features. <1>
