Description
An archaeological desk-based assessment and walkover survey were undertaken by GUARD Archaeology Limited in 2024 of an area proposed for the erection of a meteorological mast to the south-east of Bettyhill, Sutherland. The aims of the study were to assess evidence for the past human use of the area, its archaeological sensitivity, and the potential impact of any development upon the archaeological resource. The archaeological assessment found that there were no known cultural heritage sites within the proposed development area or within the 200m buffer around the proposed development area. The proposed development area lies within peatland, as demonstrated by peat cutting trenches observed from aerial photographs and during the walkover survey.
Given that the site had not been previously developed and that peat deposits would likely be disturbed it was considered that an archaeological watching brief during construction works may be required to demonstrate the presence, or not, of significant archaeological remains within those parts of the proposed development area that will be subject to groundbreaking works. <1>
