Description

An archaeological desktop and walkover survey were undertaken by Historic Assynt in 2022 in an area of proposed woodland expansion in Glencanisp, Lochinver, Sutherland. The walkover survey was conducted on 28th May 2022 at a time when bracken cover was light but filling rapidly. The survey revealed multiple structures within or bordering the proposed woodland area, of which most had been recorded previously. Details of the proposed planting scheme were not known to the surveyors at the time of the survey, so the recommendations appended to each site assumed that planting was intended, even though the terrain may have suggested this would be unlikely. At least two areas where structures were found had already been covered with trees (presumed natural rather than a historic planting scheme). As a result, no recommendation was offered for those as it was assumed that trees would not be harvested and replaced. The extent of exclusion zones beyond the site feature or area varied according to the site and was indicated for each site where this recommendation was made. Ten areas were identified as part of this survey as containing one or more historic structures, of which a couple were probably just outside the area planned, but were included with the survey results for completeness and context. <1>
