Date

Description

An archaeological trial trenching evaluation was carried out by AOC Archaeology Group in 2025 at Comerscroft, Fortrose, Ross-shire in advance of a proposed housing development. Five trenches were excavated across the development area. Topsoil depth varied significantly across the site and may have represented redeposited soil from recent housing developments. Three shallow scoop features were identified in Trench 1 and Trench 5. They were filled with topsoil and contained 20th-century pottery sherds. Previous archaeological excavations within the vicinity of the site had highlighted the challenges of feature identification caused by the geology of this area. Although no significant archaeological features were encountered during the archaeological evaluation, the Highland Council Historic Environment Team requested that an archaeological watching brief be undertaken during all future ground-breaking works at the site. <1>
