Description

A rapid assessment of the historic environment was undertaken by Clyde Archaeology in 2024 in advance of proposed subsea cable connections between Skye and South Uist. The assessment focussed on the landfalls and onshore connections at Holmar on South Uist and three locations on Skye: Meanish Pier, the eastern end of Loch Pooltiel and Ardmore Bay. At Meanish seven historic environment assets were recorded within the survey corridor all of which also appeared be of early modern and/or modern industry. These included a pier, jetty/slipway, a listed category B former wool store, two ruined stores and a possible low turf covered wall. An aircraft crash site was also recorded but its location is more likely within Loch Pooltiel to the north. No historic environment assets were recorded within the survey corridor at Loch Pooltiel or Ardmore Bay. The potential for buried archaeology to be present was considered to be moderate at Meanish where buried remains related to the 19th century and earlier activity could survive, and low to moderate at Ardmore Bay where artefacts related to a 16th century battle could be present. <1>
