Description

An archaeological desk-based assessment and walkover surveys were carried out by West Coast Archaeological Services in 2025 on the Drimnin Estate, in Morvern, Lochaber, in advance of proposed woodland creation schemes. The work was undertaken to assess the nature and extent of any archaeological sites likely to be affected within the areas outlined for planting and regeneration and to inform recommendations for the protection and management of any sites recovered. The surveys, carried out on the 19th and 20th of May 2025, identified 18 sites of archaeological interest, including turf and stone dykes comprising field systems at Teanga nan Allt and within the Aunt’s Wood extension. Structures included 2 sheepfolds/fanks, 6 shielings/pens, stone field walls, very degraded areas of rig and furrow cultivation, a revetted platform that may have formed the base for a prehistoric hut circle and another hut circle at Teanga nan Allt. Mitigation measures were proposed to safeguard the sites during the establishment of the woodland creation projects. <1>
