Date
March 2025
Description
A desk-based assessment and walkover survey was carried out by Alder Archaeology in 2025 as part of a retrospective planning application (2023/0455/DET) along the route of a resurfaced track on the Balvil Estate, Alvie. The DBA identified several building remains from a farmstead to the north-east and a township to the south-west, clearance cairns throughout the area and a field boundary. A farmstead, township and clearance cairns were surveyed, with no damage visible from the works carried out or from any other activities since they were last surveyed in 2002. A standing stone was recorded within the township complex, which is possibly natural but appears deliberately set within the remains of the buildings and is likely a part of this site. <1>
NOTE: The surveyor did not see a later report for a survey carried out in 2019 by West Coast Archaeological Services (see EHG5502), during which the possible standing stone was recorded [IS-L 06/08/2025].
