Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Highland Archaeology Services in 2025 in advance of the development of an Outdoor Classroom at Rumster, Caithness. Fieldwork was undertaken on 13th May 2025. The project design had specified the excavation of three small evaluation trenches but once onsite it was clear that the trenches specified were in a different location to the footprint of the ‘Rotunda’ marked out by the Surveyor. The client and the plant operator felt that it would be more beneficial to excavate the entire footprint rather that set up the three small trenches. The area stripped measured 12m by 16m, approximately 215m² covering the footprint of the ‘Rotunda’. One clay field drain was recorded, other than this no archaeological features were recorded within the development area and no further work was recommended. <1>
