Date

June 2025

Description

A programme of archaeological desk-based assessment (DBA) and walkover survey were undertaken by Highland Archaeology Services in 2025 in advance of the development of a new house at Firemore, Poolewe. Within the boundary of the proposed development WWII remains relating to the former Boom Defence post had been previously noted. The DBA established the presence of the WWII Boom Defence post linked to Mellon Charles and the later use of the site as a fishing research station. The survey was designed to identify and record visible archaeological remains in the vicinity of the proposed development. Twenty-six features were recorded within or close to the site. These were mainly concrete pads associated either with the Boom Defence post or Fishing research Station but also included steps, pipelines and a probable anemometer base all likely to be associated with the two phases of this site. A slipway and likely modern pet grave were also recorded. Recommendations were made for additional material to be passed to the Highland Historic Environment Record as well as the Arctic Convoy Museum in Aultbea. No further fieldwork was recommended. <1>
