Date
Dec 2023 - April 2024
Description
A watching brief was undertaken by Highland Archaeology Services in 2023-4 ahead of the construction of a new community stand, access roads, and set down areas at the Northern Meeting Park, Inverness. The fieldwork was conducted intermittently between the 13th of December 2023 and the 4th of April 2024.
For the purposes of reporting the work was divided into two areas, Area A and Area B. Area A consisted of the road, cabin area, and path along the western front of the stand. Area B referred to the area where the new Community Pavilion Stand was to be built. Three relatively small areas on the west and south edges of the site were not watched due to buried services and miscommunication of the method of excavation. The partial remains of the 1920’s pavilion were exposed and recorded. The partial foundations of the 20th century spectator stand were significantly more substantial than anticipated in the areas in which they survived. No further archaeology was uncovered within the rest of the development area.
Although the excavation of a path along the east face of the Grand Stand was expected to be watched the area was longer being excavated. Therefore, as the archaeological remains uncovered on-site had been recorded and categorised there were no further recommendations. <1>
