EHG816 - Walkover survey - Proposed WGS, Kilbraur, Strath Brora

An archaeological desk-based assessment and walk-over survey of the area of the sheepstock club grazings at Kilbraur, Strath Brora was carried out by C Dagg in 2002. The object was to locate all recorded archaeological features and locate previously unrecorded features over the whole area of the grazings. This information was to be used in the design of a proposed Woodland Grant Scheme, to cover an approximate 300 hectares of the entire 1805 hectares of grazing land. The initial proposal was for the WGS to cover an area between the eastern boundary of the Kilbraur grazings and the Scottarie Burn, while a second area, forming a triangle between the Scottarie Burn, the Allt Storal and the northern boundary of the hill ground, was under consideration for addition to the first area, should too great a proportion of the first area prove unsuitable for planting. As the density of the known sites, particularly on both sides of the Allt an Tuirc, indicated large areas of ground which would not be considered suitable for planting on the grounds of the protection of the archaeological record, these areas were not included in this walk-over survey. Constraints of time also indicated that effort should be concentrated on the two proposed planting areas, and adjacent areas where archaeological features had not yet been identified but which seemed likely, given the pattern of known settlement features, to contain unrecorded archaeological sites. A number of new sites, both of prehistoric and post-medieval periods were recotrded and recommendations for the area with regard to the proposed WGS were made. <1>
