Description

Stuart Farrell was commissioned by Ewen Gillies Builders Ltd in May 2003 to undertake an archaeological watching brief at Boath Road, Auldearn (NH 91920/55509 - centred) as part of a proposed development. Highland Council Archaeology Unit produced a specification for this work. Evaluation work conducted by the author in March 2003 had revealed the partial remails of a 19th century row of buildings and pits of a late 19th/ earth 20th century date. Further work had been recommended for a watching brief during the clearing of the site due to the sites proximity to the nearby church and churchyard. The watching brief revealed further remains of the terraced 19th century houses, especially to the east end of the site during excavations for a retaining wall, and part of the building to the west but no other features of archaeological interest.
