Description

Stuart Farrell was commissioned by Colvin Designs in April 2003 to undertake a project of archaeological recording at Mitchell’s Chemist Shop, High Street, Dornoch (NH79763/89722) as part of a redevelopment project. Highland Council Archaeology Unit produced a specification for this work. Work included a photographic survey prior to work commencing and an archaeological watching brief on the alterations made. Work during the demolition of internal fittings revealed a number of blocked up fireplaces, recessed cupboards and a little original decoration in the form of paintwork around the main house doorway and fitting’s associated with part of the building being a former post office. A watching brief conducted on foundations for new extensions revealed no archaeological features or deposits due to their limited depth. No recommendations for further work have been currently proposed.
