Description

Archaeological trial trenching was undertaken in the form of a watching brief by C Dagg in October 2003 in advance of a proposed wind farm development at Buolfruich, Houstry, Caithness. A total of thirteen trenches were opened: at each of the five turbine sites, two trenches measuring 10m x 3m were laid out at right angles to each other along the radius of the proposed turbine base. At the site of the turbine construction area and car park, two trenches (one measuring 40m x 6m and the second 30m x 3m) were opened up. Finally, six trenches were opened to investigate the suitability of each site as as a potnetial quarry for road material. These trenches measured generally 3m x 3m although trench 13 was extended to 30m. No new archaeological sites were added to those already identified. <1>
