Full Description
NC91SW 26 9449 1117.
An unusually small stone-walled hut circle, within a small field system, was found during field investigation on a narrow shelf in a SE-facing slope. The hut is oval, measuring 6.5m NW-SE by 5.0m within a wall about 1.2m thick. A simple entrance occurs in the SE arc. About 15.0m downslope in a slight hollow is a small enclosure 3.0m internal diameter within a wall 0.9m maximum breadth. A depression in the SE arc probably indicates and entrance. In construction and general appearance it resembles a hut but its purpose is uncertain.
The field system comprises about one hectare of cleared ground on a relatively steep hillside. The clearance is either piled up in heaps or deposited at the edge on steeper uncultivated patches. No measurable plots as such are apparent. A boulder wall extends from an old track to the east of the hut, skirts the north and west of the field system and continues south until it fades just before a depopulated settlement. The track appears contemporary with the depopulation, and thus this boulder wall may be of similar date.
