Full Description

A ruined farmstead, formerly called Meinaval, near Broubster.

ND 030 605. Mernaval.
Low footings of a longhouse and adjacent building with a kiln at the W end. Also low walling and ytraces of rig and furrow.

A farmstead comprising four unroofed buildings, one of which is a long building of four compartments, and two enclosures, lying within the remains of a ring-dyke, is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1877, sheet x). Three unroofed buildings and three enclosures are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10,000 map (1987).

The buildings, enclosures and other features are visible in LiDAR data gathered by AOC Archaeology in 2011 as part of the mitigation for the visual impact on the archaeological landscape associated with the proposed Baillie Hill windfarm, Caithness. The features were not identified in the initial data analysis an therefore are not recorded/listed in the project report. <1>
