Full Description

A hut circle at Meall an T-Socaidh. Originally recorded by the OS as hut circle 'A'. For hut circle 'B' see MHG63317.

At NC 7737 3257 and NC 7732 3249, in the middle reaches of an east-facing hillside, are two hut circles (A and B respectively) in association with a field system 1.5 hectares area. The latter is mainly shown by stone clearance mounds spaced on average 10-20.0m apart, with occasional lynchets evident; one or two cultivation plots 10.0m by 15.0m are discernible.
'A', set against a steep slope, is 6.3m internal diameter and has a simple entrance from the east. A partly heather-covered wall, 0.4m high and not more than 1.0m in width, is largely composed of boulder slabs on edge.
'B', remains as a platform-effect set into a slight slope with vestiges of peat-silted wall rimming the N half. It is about 12.0m diameter overall. An entrance is no longer evident.
Surveyed at 1:10 560.
Visited by OS (J M) 17 February 1977.

The hut circle is visible on vertical aerial photographs taken at various times between 1999 and 2023. <1>
