Full Description

NC71SW 4 7396 1137.

NC 739 113. There is possible a crannog here (on or in the vicinity of the northern islet in Loch Beannach).
Info from R J Adam to OS 7 September 1962.

The small island situated in Loch Beannach at NC 7391 1137 appears to be artificial. It is almost circular, barely 1ft above water level with a small mound in centre rising to about 4ft. It is possible that island may have been built to encourage breeding of wild fowl on loch but there is no evidence of island being the site of a crannog. It was not possible to get access to island. The end of the small spit of land about 190 m N of the island appears also to have been fashioned into a small circular flat area, possibly as a landing place for boats. No evidence was seen to suggest a crannog. No further information obtained at Sutherland Estate Office, Golspie.
Visited by OS (W D J) 16 April 1964.

The islet noted by previous OS investigator at NC 7396 1137, some 35m from NW shore of the loch bears remains of a crannog. The size of the islet has increased to about 31.0m diameter due to the lowering of loch, but the crannog occupies the centre of islet and survives as a flat-topped stony mound, 17m in diameter and 1.2m above the level of the islet, now overgrown with grass. The stony content of the crannog contrasts with the gravel bed of the loch. There is no evidence of a causeway. The 'small spit of land 190m N of the island has no archaeological significance.
Visited by OS (N K B) 10 June 1981.
