Full Description

NC80SE 15 850 008.

A Viking iron axe from the shore by (Grieg 1940) or near (Info from TS Catalogue of Dunrobin Museum, by A S Henshall) Dunrobin Castle (NC 850008) is in the museum there (Acc No. X121). It is very badly corroded and is partially bent out of shape but has measured 19cms. in length.
In 1925 an iron ring, about 5.4cms. in diameter, was on display with the axe, suggesting that they had been found together, but it was not noted in 1966 (Info from Catalogue of Dunrobin Museum).

The axehead is now on display at the NMS, listed in the catlogue under Acc. No. IL 743. It has beed dated to the 9th-12th Century. <1>
