Full Description
NC80SE 27 8563 0499.
NC 8563 0499. Adjacent to a stream, at the edge of formerly cultivated ground associated with the homestead (NC80SE 25), is a kidney-shaped mound measuring 12.0m N-S by 11.0m E-W and 1.5m high, open to the N where it abuts the stream. Soil erosion indicates a content of crumbling burnt stones.
The mound is similar to that at NC 7661 0718 (NC70NE 3) which was excavated by the RCAHMS and considered to be a kiln, having discovered what was described as a flue. No such details are visible in this mound and it bears a strong resemblance to the burnt mounds of Orkney. Surveyed at 1/10,000.
Visited by OS (N K B) 3 February 1976.
