Full Description

NC51SW 4 546 131
Two areas of depopulation consisting of the footings of at least 17 buildings from 7m by 3.5m to 24m by 4.5m and the remains of one building 11m by 4m by 1.2m. Associated with them are the footings of three enclosures and a kiln.
Visited by OS June 1963.

The remains of this deserted township lie about 1km SE of Shinness Lodge. The majority of the township lies within an earth-and-stone bank between 0.2m and 0.75m high and 0.5m thick. Seventeen buildings and five enclosures are currently visible, although at least another three existed prior to the partial improvement of the area. There are four kilns within the township, one of which stands up to 1.5m high and has a rectangular foundation at its W side; two of the others are set side by side in an artificial mound. There are three patches of rig within the enclosing bank and a scatter of small cairns along a slight ridge to NE.1st edition OS 6-inch map (Sutherland, sheet 94: surveyed 1873) shows the enclosing bank completing a circuit to the S of its present limits. The 'globular' form of Ceann na Coille contrasts with the linear layout of the other depopulated sites in the immediate vicinity.
Srveyed at 1:10,000 Visited by RCAHMS (DCC) 18 September 1989

A township comprising thirteen unroofed buildings, four enclosures, some cultivated ground and head-dyke is depicted on 1st edition OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1878, sheet lxxxv). Seventeen unroofed buildings, three enclosures, some field walls and part of a head-dyke are shown on current edition OS 1:10,000 map (1989).
