(A: NC 6740 3540) Hut Circle (NR)
OS 6"map, (1963)

A hut circle (A) was found during fieldwork.
Visited by OS (E G C) 7 May 1961.

There are two hut circles (A and B), the second newly recognised at NC 6742 3531, situated in open level moorland.
Hut 'A' is unusually well-preserved, measuring 7.4m in diameter within a wall 0.4m high, and 1.3m wide, broadening to 2.3m at both sides of a clubbed entrance in the southeast arc, the entrance being 0.8m wide. The wall construction of boulder facing with a core of small rubble stones is clearly exposed. In the centre of the hut is a low pile of stones, about 3.0m in diameter and 0.2m high. The presence of this mound and the good state of preservation of the wall may indicate later re-use. Some 25.0m east of the hut are the footings of a shieling, 4.5m by 2.0m.
B, reduced and peat-silted, is 12.0m NW-SE by 11.0m within a wall spread to 1.5m to 2.0m broad. The entrance is in the south-east arc.
There are about six stone clearance heaps near the huts, and a similar number of mounds of the same type 150.0m to the east, but no plots are discernible.
Surveyed at 1:10,000.
Visited by OS (J M) 17 March 1977.
