Full Description

A hut circle near Altnagar Lodge Hotel. Recorded by the OS as hut circle 'A'.

Found during field investigation at NH 5824 9918 is a well-defined hut platform (A) surrounded by a stone wall 1.6m thick in the NW where both faces are visible. It measures 13.5m NW-SE by 11.5m between wall centres, with an ill-defined entrance in the SE.
To E at NH 5828 9917 is another less well-defined hut (B) measuring 12.5m N-S by 11.5m between wall centres. It has an ill-defined entrance in the S.
Around the huts are a few stone clearance heaps from contemporary cultivation plots.
Surveyed at 1:10 560. Visited by OS (A A) 25 September 1973 and (N K B) 1 October 1969.

No change to previous field report.
Surveyed at 1:10 000 Visited by OS (J M) 27 October 1976.

On the date of visit the area of the field-system was shrouded with bracken and only a few of the larger cairns were observed.

The hut circle is visible in vertical aerial photographs taken in 2016. <1>
