Full Description

This is probably the original location of the settlement of Achentoul, shown by Roy to be clustering around the confluence of a small burn and the Bannock Burn and named 'Achnedoul'. Cultivated fields are shown either side of the buildings bordered by the Bannock Burn to the north. <1>

By the time of the OS 1st Edition map only a single roofed building and an enclosure (both of which may not have been contemporary with the settlement shown by Roy) remained, named 'Achabhannaich'.

Vertical aerial photography, especially that that taken in 2009 and 2016, shows the slight partial remains of dykes and rig close to the confluence of the unnamed burn and the Bannock Burn centred at NGR 288327 935159 but the areas immediately to the northeast and southwest (as indicated by Roy) do not appear as though they had been under agriculture at any time in the past. Following the burn southeastwards, the enclosure and remains of the building shown on the OS 1st Edition map are also visible. Immediately to the south are the dyked remains of fields containing relict rig, over which a circular sheep fold had been placed, as also showN on the OS 1st Edition map. To the east are two smaller field also containg the remains of rig. <2> <3>
