Full Description

Visited by OS (E G C) 11 April 1962.
(ND 1424 5044) Enclosure (NR) OS 6" map, (1963)
This enclosure, situated in open moorland, measures some 13.5m NW-SE by 12m transversely over a bank up to 0.3m high but otherwise vague. The entrance is now uncertain. There is no evidence of stone in the construction. The features suggest that this is probably an old sheepfold. Nearby, to the W and S, are cultivation strips, buildings and enclosures abandoned in the 19th century.
Revised at 1/10000. Visited at OS (J M) 11 November 1981.
A desk based assessment and walkover survey was undertaken by J Hooper in February 2001 prior to a proposed windfarm development at Achkeepster.
Site 1; Just outside the improved ground belonging to the farmstead of Tormsdale and located on a low knoll, above more marshy ground to the west, is a circular enclosure formed from a low earthen bank, c.0.2m high. Its internal diameter measures c. 9m, over banks spread to between I m and 1.5m. The enclosure was thought to be a possible sheepfold by the OS surveyor in 1981, presumably because of its close proximity to the later settlement of Tormsdale. However, it has an entrance in the southeast quadrant (possibly exacerbated by recent vehicle tracks) and is perhaps more likely to be a hut circle. <1>
