The auxilliary sailing vessel YOUNG FOX was reported missing on 6 December 1928. She was believed to have sunk in heavy weather whilst on passage from Sunderland to Portmahomack.

Surveying Details

The vessel sank at 57 52 00N, 003 41 00W or about 3 miles east of Tarbat Ness.

13 August 1976. The wreck was examined on 30 July 1975 at 57 51 41N, 003 38 31W, or Moray Firth hf - patt 1 359.22, pat 2 311.42 or decca [n scot] red h 3.95, green c 40.52, purple a 53.23. The least echosounder depth [obtained by 18 foot submersible] was 31.6 in general depth of 38 metres. No scouring was observed. The length indicated by sonar was 30 metres. It lies with its keel roughly on an orientation of 045/225 degrees.

10 June 1993. The site was dived upon at 57 41 38.5N, 003 38 35W using GPS to fix the position. The vessel is fairly well broken up but is contained in one general area. It stands about 6 metres clear of a firm seabed. Much coal lies around the wreckage.
