Full Description
An enclosure and a building, situated beside of the Allt Beithe Garbh, were recorded during a survey of the West Affric estate by J Wordsworth for the National Trust for Scotland. The enclosure straddles the burn with most of the walling on the E although there are a few traces on the W. the enclosure is some 70m long terminating at the S in a confused jumble of rubble including the remains of a building measuring 4.5m from NW to SE by 2.5m overall. It stands to 0.6m in height. There is an entrance in the centre of the NE wall. A vague group of walls to the N and E may represent further enclosures. The poor preservation in this area possibly caused by later flooding disturbing the stones makes this difficult to interpret.. The main enclosure must be to restrain stock and it is unclear whether it was for cattle or sheep. If for the former it might have been for cattle drovers to restrain cattle being moved from the west coast to the southern trysts. The building would then be a small overnight bothy. If the enclosure was for sheep it must have been built at the beginning of the sheep fanning period as it seems more primitive in construction than the surviving stells. <1>
