Full Description

What may be an unroofed shieling-hut is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1875, sheet l), but it is not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1971).
Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 21 May 1996

As previously recorded by Robin Turner a building is sited here above the the flood plain of the river, though the terrace on which it is sited would appear to have originally been derived from outwash from the burn. This possible shieling-hut, situated on a terrace (perhaps originally derived from outwash from the burn) above the Allt Beithe Garbh, was recorded during a survey of the West Affric estate by J Wordsworth for the National Trust for Scotland. The building is drystone-built with rounded corners and has a distinct batter to its walls narrowing from 0.7m wide at the base and standing up to 0.5m in height. It measures 8m from E to W by 3m with a 0.7m wide doorway centrally placed in the S wall. There is no evidence of a chimney. The siting of this building is odd as it would appear to be a shieling and yet there are no obvious grazings nearby. It may therefore have a different function such as a pre-Deer Forest Stalker's bothy or been used by an illicit distillery. The style of building would suggest it was built before sheep were introduced in the 1840s. It is unclear if there is sufficient tumble to suggest it was stone walled to roof height. This building lies within enclosure 3 that has already been built. Rowan seedlings are presently evident both within the stonework and adjacent to the building.
