Full Description

A survey of the archaeological and historic features was undertaken within Abernethy Forest Reserve for the RSPB in 1995.

The foundations of a roofed building to the east of the track and main north entrance into Rynettin. Although heavily obscured by dense juniper scrub and heather, the foundations appeared to belong to a rectangular building 11.3m N/NE, 4.4m W. A partition wall was apparent 7.9m west of the easternmost wall. At the east end, the footings were 0.4 - 0.6m high, consisting of single and double course sandstone rubble. Elsewhere, the vegetation obscured the coursing but roofing slates were present to the west. No obvious doorway was found. A roofed building was shown here on the 1858 Seafield Estate map and on the 1863 OS map, although not on the current 1:10,000 OS map. <1>
